Thanks for joining me!
I have just returned from Stoiccon 2018. The event was a resounding success. Myself and over 300 attendees where presented with range of Stoic principles, practices and techniques. The main speakers and workshops where informative and mostly accessible to people who have a formal knowledge of Stoicism.
I did though leave the event thinking to myself on my journey back to Scotland as a working class practicing Stoic. How do we make this philosophy more accessible to the wider population? I know for my own experience that trying to live a life according to nature, (This will be explained in my next blog), striving towards using more sound rational choices and recognising that the only true good in life is virtue. Has not only put my mind more at ease but I have recognised that I have more meaning a purpose due my more rational, wise choices.
I aim over the coming weeks and months to relate my experience as a working class Stoic and show how this philosophy can help you as it has me. We do not need to reach the heights of the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius or Seneca the Younger to practice Stoic principles. We can from a working class perspective use the example of the former Slave Epictetus and flourish no matter what ‘Fortuna’ throws at us.
So I thank you for taking some time to read my opening blog. If one person can relate to my experiences and it helps them on their journey towards a more virtuous life then I have achieved one of my aims and goals.
We will discuss on our next blog what living in accord with nature means to the Stoics and how applying this can help you in everyday life to overcome a number of obstacles .
Thanks
